1. James Cameron thought of Avatar 14 years before he started his project

“Fourteen years ago, Jim had a dream in which he saw Pandora,” says Jon Landau, the film’s producer, in a behind-the-scenes report.

2. Cameron waited until he had the right technology to begin production on Avatar

Cameron wrote an outline in 1995 that already contained all the characters, animals, and settings, “but it turned out that, at that time, it was not possible to do what I wanted to do,” says the film director.

He had to wait for the technology to catch up with the script he had written.

3. In 2005, Cameron took the script for Avatar “out of a drawer” to begin bringing it to life

“I pulled it out of the drawer, dusted it off, read I,t and said, ‘This story isn’t that bad. ‘ This is a movie I would go see,” Cameron recalls.

4. They hired world-renowned artists to create Pandora

“We hired a number of world-class artists, people of quality and prestige, who would impress,” says Cameron.

Rick Carter, the art director, adds regarding Cameron: “It wasn’t a world he made up on the fly; it was something he had seen and he told us about in detail.”

5. Avatar was a revolutionary experience in Hollywood

“One of the things that no one can take away from me is the fact that I have been part of a revolutionary experience in Hollywood,” confesses actress Zoe Saldana.

“We always try to push boundaries and innovate. This time, we tried to push boundaries, and it was difficult, but we kept trying, and it took a long time because the result is unlike anything we’ve seen before,” says Cameron.

6. Avatar is the highest-grossing Oscar®-winning film in history

Avatar was a film that marked the history of cinema in many ways, but also for being the Oscar® winner that grossed the most at the box office of all time: it grossed some $2.84 billion.

In 2010, Avatar was nominated for nine Academy Awards® and won three: Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Special Effects.

Pandora: The World of Avatar opened at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park at Walt Disney World Resort on May 27, 2017. For the past five years, guests from around the world have been able to experience life on another planet.
