Although the Oscars red carpet seems to be designed to highlight the best dresses seen on the catwalk and become the best opportunity for brands to show off their most impressive designs, sometimes neither the stylists nor the actresses get it right when choosing the look for the big night of cinema.
Throughout the past 95 editions, there are actresses who, let’s say, have not had the best advice. Let’s blame those stylists, those who supposedly do a job of finding the best model for their clients.
We don’t know if they decided on their own or if they, at some point in order not to plunge them into misery, didn’t dare, but what is clear is that there were blunders in several editions.
We have compiled the worst outfits seen on the red carpet of the Oscars, and we have to warn you in advance that some of them will make you shiver, and not exactly from the cold.
Bjork. (WireImage/Jeffrey Mayer)
Who could forget this dress? Icelandic singer Bjork sent the fashion world into a frenzy when she hit the red carpet in a swan-inspired feathered dress by Marjan Pejoski. The outfit was so iconic that Ellen DeGeneres even poked fun at it when she hosted the Emmy Awards that same year. The singer brought along six ostrich eggs and scattered them on the red carpet before the ceremony.
Demi Moore.
In 1989, Demi Moore decided to design her own dress, a creative black corset, cycling shorts and a golden brocade cape skirt. The star accessorised the outfit with a curly updo, diamond earrings, a matching necklace and black shoes. Was she ahead of the biker leggings? Too much so. The star received criticism from all the experts.
Jennifer Connelly
It was 2002 when Jennifer Connelly decided she wasn’t going to catch a cold on the red carpet and wore a scarf, perhaps paying homage to Pedro Almodovar. She collected the statuette with this inexplicable look.
Gwyneth Paltrow
Earlier this year, Gwyneth Paltrow opted for this Alexander McQueen design. Later, she said that she should have worn it with a completely different bra and makeup.
Paul McCartney and Heather Mills
2002 was definitely a tough year for fashion. Heather Mills’ look left us speechless.
Selma Blair, Christina Applegate and Cameron Diaz.
I don’t need to tell you what year it was, but we have to talk about
Selma Blair’s look. Christina Applegate and Cameron Diaz’s looks are also not worthy of applause, but Selma’s attempt at a sexy flapper look is terrifying. Cameron Diaz’s dress deserves a little more scrutiny, but we do find it funny that she used a Fred Leighton necklace as a belt.
Juliette Binoche.
This look by Jean Paul Gaultier earns Juliette Binoche a place on this list on its own merits.
Tyra Banks.
The Vera Wang that Tyra Banks wore on the red carpet in 2000 makes the model look like one of those sweet-smelling dolls we used to play with.
Uma Thurman
It seems like all the sheets at Zara Home fell on Uma Thurman in 2004 with this Christian Lacroix dress.
Sally Kirkland.
We assume Sally Kirkland’s goal at the Oscars is always to wear a gruesome look, but this one takes the cake.
Madonna.
It’s been 13 years since Madonna’s look made us cry as hard as she did that day.
Kate Mara.
We don’t know if Kate Mara had a fight with a tiger before posing for the media, but this Jack Guisso dress looks like it was devoured by some XXL feline.
Ted Turner and Jane Fonda.
It’s safe to say that Jane Fonda was going for a bold look when she donned this black and white bustier top that she wore with a matching plaid skirt. It’s the first time in fashion history that black and white hasn’t worked.
